Ragtime is a fearless story about cultures, ethnicities and religions clashing in turn of the century New York City. Tell three different stories from three different neighborhoods we watch as the characters embark on a crash course in which all of their lives, beliefs and skin color will collide.
The book accompanying the Broadway production was broken into three sections, one for each New York neighborhood the scenes take place in. We did type exploration using a variety of old style wood cut letters in an overlapping arrangement which reflects not only the aesthetic of the era the story takes place in but also foreshadows the overlapping story lines. Using this as an inspiration we ended up with a nice example of type representing a plot in a subtle way that generates an interesting result.
A real fun project for a show that was as riveting and energetic as Ragtime.
